Milwaukee Spanish Immersion

Summary:

Milwaukee Spanish Immersion is an elementary school serving 716 students in grades PK-5 in the Milwaukee School District. Despite being one of the larger elementary schools in the district, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Wisconsin elementary schools over the past decade, currently ranking 898 out of 1,061 schools in the state for the 2023-2024 school year.

Academically, Milwaukee Spanish Immersion's performance, as measured by the Forward Exam, is significantly below the state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 34.29% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 52.07%. The school's performance is also below the Milwaukee School District averages, and nearby schools like Fairview Elementary and Honey Creek Elementary generally outperform Milwaukee Spanish Immersion on academic measures. Additionally, the school has experienced high rates of chronic absenteeism, ranging from 16.7% to 34.3% over the past five school years, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages.

Despite these challenges, the school's Spanish immersion program may be a unique asset that could be leveraged to improve student outcomes. The school's performance in social studies, where students have consistently outperformed the district and state averages, suggests that the immersion program may be contributing to stronger content knowledge in this area. Additionally, the school's diverse student population, with significant percentages of Hispanic (around 50%) and African American (around 30%) students, indicates that the immersion program may be providing some benefits for these subgroups. However, the performance and resource challenges faced by Milwaukee Spanish Immersion are not unique to the school but rather reflect broader systemic issues within the Milwaukee School District, as evidenced by the similar struggles of nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
