Clemens Elementary

Summary:

Clemens Elementary is a public elementary school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, serving 285 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Milwaukee School District, which is ranked 417 out of 428 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Clemens Elementary faces significant challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 35.6% in 2019-2020 to 66.4% in 2021-2022, which is much higher than the state and district averages. The school's test scores are also significantly lower than state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 4.26% of 3rd-grade students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 52.07% statewide and 21.43% in the Milwaukee School District. Student performance at Clemens Elementary also varies significantly by subgroup, with the school ranking in the bottom 25% for female, male, and special education students.

The struggles at Clemens Elementary are not unique within the Milwaukee School District, as nearby schools like Keefe Avenue Elementary, Pratt Elementary, and Barbee Elementary also face low test scores and high chronic absenteeism rates. This suggests a broader systemic issue within the district that requires a more comprehensive and sustained approach to school improvement, particularly given the high poverty rates (over 98% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) at Clemens Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son has attended Clemens for 3 years and I have found he is well above the average child his age.
I have had nothing except a wonderful experiance with the staff at the school, the same goes for my two children now at the school. The teachers are wonderful and give their all to the students. I was schocked to see the over all score is so low !!! I do not understand it, but know my kids are doiing very very well and are above the scores this is due to the teachers and staff at the school. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
