Davis High School

Summary:

Davis High School is a public high school located in Yakima, Washington, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 2,330 students. The school is part of the Yakima School District, which is ranked 230 out of 247 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Davis High School has a significantly higher Hispanic student population, with 87.81% of students identifying as Hispanic in the 2022-2023 school year. Academically, the school's performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally lower than the state and district averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 16.43% of students were proficient or better in SBAC Math for all grades, compared to the state average of 41.68%. The school's four-year graduation rate has fluctuated, ranging from 84.3% in 2018-2019 to 90.0% in 2019-2020, but is still lower than the state average. Additionally, Davis High School has a higher dropout rate compared to the state and district averages, ranging from 3.7% in 2020-2021 to 8.3% in 2018-2019.

While Davis High School faces significant challenges, including a high concentration of Hispanic and low-income students, lower academic performance, and higher dropout rates, the nearby schools in the Yakima School District, such as Yakima Open Doors, Yakima Satellite Alternative Programs, and Stanton Academy, generally have even lower academic performance and higher dropout rates. The school's increased per-student spending, from $10,012 in 2019-2020 to $16,552 in 2021-2022, has not yet translated into significant improvements in academic outcomes, suggesting the need for targeted interventions and support to address the underlying factors contributing to the challenges faced by the students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
