Summary:

Lyon Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Tacoma, Washington, serving 333 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Tacoma School District, which is ranked 152 out of 247 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lyon Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with higher percentages of Hispanic (24.32%) and Pacific Islander (5.71%) students, as well as a higher percentage of students identifying as two or more races (16.52%). Academically, the school outperforms the district and state averages in SBAC/Math (46.75%) and WCAS/Science (56.36%) proficiency, particularly for its 5th-grade students. However, the school's SBAC/ELA proficiency rate (42.21%) is lower than the district (45.84%) and state (52.63%) averages. Lyon Elementary's Hispanic students and students with low socioeconomic status perform relatively well, ranking in the top 3 and top 4 in the state, respectively, for their subgroups.

Compared to nearby schools in the Tacoma School District, Reed Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, and Sheridan Elementary, Lyon Elementary has stronger performance in math and science but lower proficiency in English language arts. The school's diverse student population and higher percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds present both challenges and opportunities in meeting the learning needs of its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote All teachers we have had have been amazing. My kids transferred in from another local school and were evaluated quickly and given the supports they needed to succeed. Community culture is good with after school events and assemblies. Preschool teacher is great and special education staff is awesome. TPS seems to change principals around exert few years so we don’t get too attached Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
