Summary:

Thorndyke Elementary is a public elementary school in Seattle, Washington, serving 370 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Tukwila School District, which is ranked 232 out of 247 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Thorndyke Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Washington elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on standardized tests. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 16.46% of Thorndyke students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 52.63% statewide and 32.02% in the Tukwila School District. In math, only 17.61% of Thorndyke students were proficient or better, compared to 41.68% statewide and 19.59% in the district. The school struggles to support the academic achievement of its diverse student population, ranking in the bottom 10-20% of Washington elementary schools for its performance with African American, Hispanic, English Language Learner, and low socioeconomic status students.

Thorndyke Elementary's academic performance is significantly lower than its neighboring schools, such as Cascade View Elementary and Tukwila Elementary, which are also in the Tukwila School District. The school's high poverty rates, with 81.92% to 84.86% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, and relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $13,931 to $25,175 over the past four school years, suggest that a multifaceted approach addressing both resource allocation and instructional practices may be necessary to drive meaningful improvements in student achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote A teacher bullied my son and the principal choose to do nothing. I had to fight tooth and nail just to transfer my son into a different class. This school meets the basic needs of the student there is no advancing for children. So if you have a choice do choose a different school for your child. The school District is lazy and backwards. No one seems to know what is going on most of them time. This school/district does not embrace or see the diversity of its students as a positive thing. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
