Aki Kurose Middle School

Summary:

Aki Kurose Middle School is a public middle school in Seattle, Washington, serving 772 students in grades 6-8. The school stands out for its diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American, Asian, and Hispanic students compared to nearby schools. However, Aki Kurose's academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, lags behind the district and state averages.

While the school spends significantly more per student ($21,659) than the state average, the academic challenges persist. Aki Kurose's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (46.33%) and Math (38.68%) fall short of the Seattle School District (67.59% and 58.68%) and the state of Washington (52.63% and 41.68%). The performance gaps are particularly pronounced for African American and Hispanic students, as well as English Language Learners and students with special needs, who rank in the bottom 10-20% of middle schools statewide.

Interestingly, some nearby schools, such as Washington Middle School and Mercer International Middle School, demonstrate stronger academic outcomes, suggesting that Aki Kurose could benefit from understanding and replicating their successful practices. Additionally, the school's high per-student spending and declining statewide ranking over the past several years indicate the need for a comprehensive approach to address the unique challenges faced by the diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Aki is a bad school. I go there and i was placed in a class that was way to easy for me. Also, i am an EXCELLENT writter and i havent been put in a class that accompany's my writting criteria. Now my parents moved me all the way to Renton just to abandone the school with a population of only 502 students. This school needs HELP way beyond anything we can do, people write dirty thing on the wall that contain horrible grammar and profanity. I wish i never been to the school, my grade dropped from a A+ to a C- at that school and they didnt even care. I admit this though, the students at the school care deeply about eachother. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
