James Baldwin Elementary School

Summary:

James Baldwin Elementary School is a public elementary school in Seattle, Washington, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Seattle School District No. 1.

While James Baldwin Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools like Sacajawea Elementary School and Viewlands Elementary School, its academic performance is lower, with only 42.35% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 50% proficient in math, compared to the district and state averages. This may be influenced by the school's higher percentage of students from low-income families, with 67.94% receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

Despite these challenges, James Baldwin Elementary has shown signs of improvement, with its statewide ranking increasing from 1,016 out of 1,106 Washington elementary schools in 2012-2013 to 640 out of 1,168 in 2023-2024, and its rating improving from 0 to 2 stars. The school's performance also varies among different student subgroups, with Hispanic students and English Language Learners performing better than the overall student population. Continued efforts to support the school's diverse student body and address the factors contributing to its lower performance may help James Baldwin Elementary achieve greater success in the future.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter goes to Northgate Elementary (starting last year) and I could not be more delighted with her progress. Northgate is a very small and amazingly diverse little community school. There are about 120 families there and 22 home languages! It's my opinion that the poor test scores reflect the particular struggles of students that are new to the country and the language. Kids without those challenges enjoy the same personalized curriculum and tremendous support - and it shows in their success. I am more than satisfied with my kid's above-grade-level school work and I'm over-the-moon about the social skills she's developing. Because Northgate's faculty works so much harder at building community, they have more knowledge to impart. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
