Firgrove Elementary

Summary:

Firgrove Elementary is a public elementary school in Puyallup, Washington, serving students from kindergarten to 6th grade. With a diverse student population, the school has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the past several years, consistently underperforming compared to the Puyallup School District and the state of Washington in both English Language Arts and Math proficiency.

One of the key challenges facing Firgrove Elementary is the significant gaps in performance between different student subgroups. While Hispanic students at the school perform better than the overall student body, White students and students of two or more races rank much lower, in the bottom 20% of Washington elementary schools. The school also struggles to support its special education and low socioeconomic status student populations. Additionally, Firgrove has a much higher percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch compared to nearby schools, indicating a high concentration of students from low-income families.

Despite the increase in spending per student at Firgrove Elementary over the past few years, this has not translated into improved academic performance or a higher statewide ranking. The school's leadership and the Puyallup School District will need to carefully examine these issues and develop targeted strategies to address the unique needs of Firgrove's diverse student population and improve overall educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I would give this school the rating of 1 star because of their lack of discipline. Much progress is needed to educate the populace of this school about acceptance of other ethnicities. It was my experience that bullying of Asian American students went on and on with nothing be done. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.

Impact of COVID-19 on Firgrove Elementary

The coronavirus has had a profound impact on education in America. Learning shifted online overnight, attendance numbers dwindled, and enrollment decreased.
