Longfellow Elementary stands out for its significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (over 94%) compared to nearby schools like Mark Twain Elementary, Emerson Elementary, and Virgie Robinson Elementary, which have more diverse student populations. Academically, Longfellow consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Washington, with proficiency rates well below the state and district averages in English Language Arts, Math, and Science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 12.5% of Longfellow students were proficient in ELA, compared to 52.63% statewide and 33.13% in the Pasco School District.

Longfellow's performance is particularly low for Hispanic, English Language Learner, and low socioeconomic status students, ranking in the bottom 10-15% of Washington elementary schools for these subgroups. The school has an extremely high percentage of students (over 94%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. Despite spending significantly more per student ($18,111 in 2021-2022) compared to the state average, Longfellow's academic outcomes have not improved, suggesting a need for a more comprehensive and effective intervention strategy from the Pasco School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The staff and teachers at Longfellow Elementary are the most caring and competent individuals I know. As has been demonstrated over and over again, by mearly rating schools according to test scores alone you are not understanding what teachers do for their students in a low socio economic school, with second language learners at 97% and who's parents are first generation immigrants to the system itself. The staff and teachers are doing so much more than educating students. We are feeding them, clothing them, finding homes and shelters for them and teaching them to be good citizens when many of their parents are too buys working two jobs to put food on their tables. Understand the situation and we welcome your solutions, but we choose to teach, These are our children and our future. Not many teachers volunteer for the job. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
