Little Mountain Elementary

Summary:

Little Mountain Elementary is a public elementary school in Mount Vernon, Washington, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Mount Vernon School District.

While Little Mountain Elementary shares a similar demographic context with nearby schools, it faces several key challenges. The school has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (around 57%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 50-78% Hispanic. Academically, Little Mountain Elementary's performance, as measured by state test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages across all grades and subjects. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 29.81% of all students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 34.46% for the district and 52.63% for the state. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 61-66% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools, which range from 27-78%.

Despite a significant increase in spending per student, from $10,662 in 2019-2020 to $22,241 in 2021-2022, Little Mountain Elementary's academic performance has been declining over the past few years. The school's ranking among Washington elementary schools has dropped from 702 in 2012-2013 to 1027 in 2023-2024, with a consistent 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. When looking at the performance of specific student subgroups, the school's Hispanic and White students perform significantly worse than their peers at the district and state levels. Addressing these challenges will likely require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that goes beyond simply increasing funding.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have been nothing but impressed with this school and the staff. My child has received a very good early education from teachers and staff that care about all the students they work with. The test scores, and parent/community gossip does not seem to represent the real effort that is being done in this school. I expect nothing but greatness, and improved ranking from the Mt. Vernon School district. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
