Kent Elementary School

Summary:

Kent Elementary School is a public elementary school in Kent, Washington, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Kent School District. The school faces significant challenges, with a high percentage of disadvantaged students, lower academic performance compared to the district and state, and a widening achievement gap.

Kent Elementary School has a notably diverse student population, with a much higher percentage of Hispanic (49.31%) and Pacific Islander (10.69%) students compared to the state average and nearby schools like Scenic Hill Elementary, East Hill Elementary, and Neely O'Brien Elementary. However, the school consistently ranks in the bottom 25% of Washington elementary schools, with proficiency rates in SBAC English Language Arts and Math significantly lower than the Kent School District and Washington state averages.

The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 67.18% to 81.21%, indicates that Kent Elementary School serves a predominantly disadvantaged population. While the school has a relatively high spending per student, ranging from $9,191 to $17,491, its academic performance continues to lag behind nearby schools, raising questions about equity and access to quality education within the Kent School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Pulled my kids out to home school. The school is moldy, dirty and has terrible procedures for student safety. There is no supervision in the morning and when the school is released for the day it is complete chaos, there is no order to the children being released into the neighboring apartment complexes. Expect to see a lot of bullying and cursing from the bigger kids. The smaller kids are not properly kept away from the older kids in the school, and considering the intensity of the home environment most kids in this school are exposed to, this is a huge oversight. This school is not a in a good neighborhood. Every day I would pick up my children and be in the line behind a man who drove a black SUV with stickers of naked girls and marijuana leaves all over it. Not something I want my kids exposed to at SCHOOL. I complained and was told there was nothing they were willing to do about it. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
