Parkside Elementary

Summary:

Parkside Elementary is a public elementary school in Des Moines, Washington, serving 445 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Highline School District, which is ranked 192 out of 247 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Parkside Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (32.36%) and Pacific Islander (4.49%) students, and a lower percentage of White students (15.73%). However, the school consistently underperforms the district and state averages in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 27.62% of Parkside students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 35.54% in the Highline School District and 52.63% statewide. In Math, only 21.76% of Parkside students were proficient or better, compared to 24.05% in the district and 41.68% statewide. Parkside Elementary also ranks particularly low for its Asian, White, and multi-racial student groups, indicating significant achievement gaps for these subgroups.

While Parkside Elementary struggles academically, the nearby Des Moines Elementary and Midway Elementary, which are also part of the Highline School District, perform significantly better on state assessments. This suggests that factors beyond just district-level support may be contributing to the academic challenges at Parkside Elementary. The school's high concentration of low-income students, with 72.88% to 79.1% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch over the past three years, also raises concerns about equity and access to quality education.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has a high rate of bullying, discrimination and prejudice. The principal needs to get her behind out of the ground and start listening to the students when they say they have problems. She hears what she wants to heay and that is all. She also takes students into her office, supposedly fordiscipline and lectures. Is it legal for her to do this behind a closed door with no one alse in the room? This is highly WRONG! When it rains students are forced to go outside forrecess, even disabled kids in wheelchairs. I am seriously considering reporting her to the School District. I wonder if it would do any good. I definitely do NOT recommend this school to anybody. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
