Pacific Middle School

Summary:

Pacific Middle School is a public middle school located in Des Moines, Washington, serving 651 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Highline School District, which is ranked 192 out of 247 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Pacific Middle School faces significant challenges, with consistently lower academic performance compared to the district and state averages. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 30.16% of Pacific Middle School students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 35.54% in the Highline School District and 52.63% statewide. The school also struggles to support certain student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 15% of Washington middle schools for Asian, African American, Hispanic, and Multi-racial students. Additionally, 80.8% of Pacific Middle School students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the state average, which likely contributes to the school's academic challenges.

When compared to other middle schools in the area, Pacific Middle School consistently underperforms. For example, Sylvester Middle School, also in the Highline School District, outperforms Pacific Middle School in both English Language Arts and Math proficiency. Despite the school's challenges, Pacific Middle School has seen an increase in per-student spending, from $10,216 in 2019-2020 to $18,700 in 2021-2022, but this additional funding does not appear to have translated into significant academic improvements.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter went here and she felt unsafe the entire time she was there. Students would disregard schools rules with no disciplinary action following. My daughter stated that she couldn't work because students were out of control and her teachers would spend her whole class time repeating tasks for their assignment. Since we have moved her she is a totally different kid. She's happy, loves school, she is meeting more positive friends and teachers. At Pacific there are very few caring teachers. As far as administration I'd like to see them kick in their disciplinary actions towards the constant students who keep breaking the rules. Those students are not learning anything and will not be prepared for high school or adult life. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
