Madrona Elementary

Summary:

Madrona Elementary is a public elementary school located in SeaTac, Washington, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 384. The school is part of the Highline School District, which is ranked 192 out of 247 districts in Washington and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Madrona Elementary faces significant challenges, as it consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Washington elementary schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates in SBAC English Language Arts, Math, and Science are significantly lower than the Highline School District and Washington state averages across all grade levels. Additionally, Madrona Elementary has an extremely high percentage of students (over 80%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending of around $20,000, this does not seem to translate into improved academic outcomes.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Parkside Elementary, North Hill Elementary, and Marvista Elementary, have significantly higher academic performance and SchoolDigger ratings, despite serving similar student populations in terms of racial diversity and economic disadvantage. This suggests that factors beyond just funding and resources may be contributing to Madrona Elementary's persistent low performance, and a comprehensive, targeted approach will be crucial in helping the school make meaningful progress.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Madrona.... I have several kids and only one of my step kids attended Madrona. She missed almost a whole year of school by the time she was in third grade with absences and tardies when she lived at her moms and the school sent home two letters to her mom during that whole time frame. She spent almost two years catching up when she moved in with us. I will say that the music teachers at Madrona are amazing but the parent involvement is horrible so the teachers and rest of the staff i am sure dont feel very supported. People in this community need to step up and get involved with their kids lives! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
