Smith Elementary School

Summary:

Smith Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Grandview, Washington, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 485. The school is part of the Grandview School District, which is ranked 204 out of 247 districts in Washington and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Smith Elementary School faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, particularly for certain student subgroups. The school consistently ranks in the bottom half of Washington elementary schools, with proficiency rates on state assessments well below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 25.69% of all students at Smith Elementary were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 52.63% statewide and 36.53% in the Grandview School District. The school's performance is especially low for female students, English Language Learners, and students with special needs.

While Smith Elementary School has seen a significant increase in per-student spending in recent years, this has not translated into improved academic outcomes. The nearby Mcclure Elementary and Thompson Elementary schools generally outperform Smith Elementary on state assessments, with higher proficiency rates in both English Language Arts and Math. However, one bright spot for Smith Elementary is its performance with migrant students, who have ranked in the top 5 to top 1 of Washington elementary schools in recent years.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Principle and teachers have a very pro-active attitude for student safety, learning and improvement. Monthly there is a day set aside to encourage parents/grandparents/adult mentors to come into the classroom to observe the daily activities. Afterward, the adult is asked to complete an evaluation form for suggestions and comments about what they observed. Also, there are 'Family Nights' where math games are played by parents and their students to demonstrate and enforce skills taught in the classroom. There are also after-school learning opportunities for students to receive extra help with their assignments on a weekly basis. As a parent, I always feel welcome to come to the school, attend assemblies if I want, or schedule an appointment to speak to the teachers or administration. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
