Sherwood Forest Elementary School

Summary:

Sherwood Forest Elementary School is a public elementary school in Federal Way, Washington, serving around 350 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Federal Way School District, which is ranked 213 out of 247 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Sherwood Forest has a relatively diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is more diverse than nearby schools in the district. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally lower than the state and district averages. This is particularly true for certain student subgroups, such as White and African American students, who perform significantly worse than their Asian and Hispanic peers. The school also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-income families. Interestingly, Sherwood Forest's spending per student has fluctuated in recent years, ranging from $12,840 in 2019-2020 to $23,772 in 2021-2022, which is higher than the nearby schools in the district.

Compared to other schools in the area, such as Green Gables Elementary and Brigadoon Elementary, Sherwood Forest's academic performance is generally lower, with lower proficiency rates in both English Language Arts and Math. Additionally, the school's statewide ranking has declined over the past few years, suggesting that its performance may be declining relative to other schools in the state. These challenges highlight the need for targeted interventions and support to address the significant disparities in student achievement and the high poverty rates at Sherwood Forest Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I agree that the classes are large, but I wouldn't say that most of the teachers can't handle it or get angry. I have seen Mrs. Blauser (kindergarten teacher) immediately get the entire classroom's attention just by raising her hand and speaking softly to the students. Mrs. VanDamme can motivate ANY student to succeed no matter what the obstacles. And the school has a wonderful gym teacher and top-notch music instructor. Close Quote

Open Quote Class sizes are much too large. I have seen many teachers become impatient while trying to control so many children. Kindergarten classes in particular are way too large for the attention a child of this age needs. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
