Fircrest Elementary School

Summary:

Fircrest Elementary School is a public elementary school in Vancouver, Washington, serving 294 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Evergreen School District, which is ranked 185 out of 247 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Fircrest Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the Evergreen School District and the state of Washington in standardized test scores for English Language Arts, Math, and Science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 28.79% of Fircrest students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 39.31% in the district and 52.63% statewide. The school also has a more diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (28.57%) and Pacific Islander (5.1%) students, but their academic performance is still below their respective district and state averages. Additionally, Fircrest has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 60.87% to 74.15%, significantly higher than the surrounding Riverview, Mill Plain, Peter S Ogden, Martin Luther King, Ellsworth, Endeavour, Crestline, Marrion, Hearthwood, and Burton elementary schools.

Fircrest Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Washington elementary schools, with a ranking between 867 and 1,040 out of 1,107 to 1,169 schools over the past several years. This places it in the bottom 25% of elementary schools in the state. The school's academic performance has declined over the years, and the performance gaps between Fircrest's student subgroups and their respective district and state averages are significant, indicating the need for targeted support and interventions. While Fircrest struggles academically, the nearby schools in the Evergreen School District and the Vancouver School District also perform below the state average, suggesting that the districts as a whole may face challenges in improving student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Rude nasty staff all the way to the top with the principal running this place like a military boot camp. I was picking up my children one afternoon and heard the principal yelling at her staff in front of children as they were returning to class from lunch. This is not a love in logic running school. This place has a very negative attitude. My 3 children have gone to Ellsworth elementary, and Burton elementary school and they always came home happy and their staff always were friendly Close Quote

Open Quote I have had 2 student attend this school and had the BEST experience. My kids also attended another elementary school in the District that did not have the level of attention not only from the teachers but the support staff.
Fircrest does a FANTASTIC job, I highly recommend them! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
