Hazelwood Elementary

Summary:

Hazelwood Elementary is a public elementary school in Lynnwood, Washington, serving 416 students in grades K-6. It is part of the Edmonds School District, which is ranked 76 out of 247 school districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Hazelwood has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of non-white students (59.86% in 2022-2023). However, the school's academic performance, as measured by SBAC/WCAS test scores, is generally lower than the Edmonds School District and Washington state averages across all grades and subjects. Hazelwood's SBAC/ELA proficiency rate for all grades was 41.45% in 2023-2024, compared to 56.14% for the district and 52.63% for the state. The school's SBAC/Math proficiency rate was 43.64%, higher than the district (45.35%) and state (41.68%) averages, but its SBAC/Science performance was 42.31%, lower than the district (53.14%) and state (49.73%) averages.

Hazelwood's performance on SBAC assessments varies significantly among different student subgroups, with Asian and White students generally performing better than Hispanic and African American students. The school has also seen a decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from a 3-star rating in 2018-2019 to a 2-star rating in the most recent years. This may be due in part to the increasing percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 29.45% in 2020-2021 to 41.59% in 2022-2023. Compared to nearby schools like Brier Elementary and Challenge Elementary, Hazelwood's academic performance is generally lower, but it outperforms some other nearby schools, such as Cedar Valley Community School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have found that all of the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They go above and beyond the call of duty in making sure "no child is left behind". Yes, I have worked in most all of the classrooms and I have worked one on one with all of the teachers, but not as a parent, as a substitute paraeducater. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
