Evergreen Elementary

Summary:

Evergreen Elementary is a public elementary school in Spanaway, Washington, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Bethel School District. With a diverse student population, the school has faced challenges in academic performance, though it has shown strengths in supporting certain student subgroups.

Evergreen Elementary's academic proficiency rates in English Language Arts (48.09%) and Math (38.26%) have been lower than the Bethel School District (49.89% and 36.67%) and the state of Washington (52.63% and 41.68%). However, the school has performed better on the science assessment, with 50.72% of students proficient or better, compared to the district (42.02%) and state (49.73%). The school's performance for African American and Hispanic students has been relatively strong, ranking among the top schools in the state for these subgroups, while White and multi-racial students have struggled.

Evergreen Elementary's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 53.09% to 63.45% over the past three years, suggests the school serves a population with greater socioeconomic challenges. The school's per-student spending has also increased significantly, from $10,673 in 2019-2020 to $19,108 in 2021-2022, potentially indicating efforts to support its diverse student body. When compared to nearby schools, such as Clover Creek Elementary and Katherine G. Johnson Elementary, Evergreen Elementary generally performs below the district average in academic proficiency, though these nearby schools also face similar challenges with their diverse student populations.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The parents need to let the teachers teach let the kids ride busses. The parents are what make the school horrible. They need to stay home and let those kids ride the bus they don’t vote for anything with the school the school is now filled with entitlement from the kids and parents. Every years it gets worse and worse. I hate the school. And it’s not because of the teachers. It’s the parents ruining their kids and the school. Let the kids learn to be responsible citizens stop being helicopter parents. Close Quote

Open Quote School of Distinction 2011, 2012, and 2013. Only 1% of Washington states' schools can say they've done that. Evergreen's teachers are getting the very most from their students. Nice job Evergreen! Close Quote

Open Quote This school has great staff that really care about the children's success. It may be in a poor neighborhood but that shouldn't discredit the school by any means. Close Quote

Open Quote My son has attended this school for the past 2 years. I have had issues with one of the teachers not letting him use the bathroom and he also was not allowed to go back to the classroom to get his lunch when he accidentally grabbed the wrong lunch bag, so he had nothing to eat but the breakfast he had before school til 3pm when he got home. He has had many incidences of getting picked on, on the playground, which there have been no adults to stop the bullying. Both years the school, as a whole has failed all state testing. I would definitely recommend another school, if you have that option. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
