Cascade Middle School

Summary:

Cascade Middle School is a public middle school in Auburn, Washington, serving 899 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Auburn School District, which has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Cascade Middle School stands out for its diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is more balanced than nearby schools. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by test scores, is generally lower than state and district averages. While the school performs relatively well for African American and Hispanic students, it struggles with Asian, Pacific Islander, and low-socioeconomic status students, ranking in the bottom quartile for these groups. Cascade Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Washington middle schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade.

Interestingly, Cascade Middle School's academic performance has been declining over the past few years, with proficiency rates in both English Language Arts and Math dropping. The school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating significant socioeconomic challenges, likely contributes to these academic struggles. While Cascade Middle School faces these issues, the nearby schools in the Federal Way School District and Kent School District also perform below state averages, suggesting broader systemic challenges in the region. However, some schools, such as Meridian Middle School, demonstrate higher academic achievement, indicating that strong performance is possible in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Cascade Middle School has far exceeded my expectations. With the transition from elementary to middle school being difficult for most students the teachers and staff at Cascade have embraced each child and encouraged them to reach beyond their limits to excel in both the classroom and extra curricular activities. I have seen nothing but positives come out of the school. Mr. Johnson has done a fantastic job being there for the children, parents and staff. Many things have been talked about in the community about the diversity at Cascade. I for one see it as a blessing. Life is not about living in a bubble, life is about seeing the world in which we live in. Cascade Middle School offers a fantastic learning environment and teaches our children about how they can make a difference in not only their community but the world in general. The teachers and staff should be very proud of the work they have accomplished. You are helping develop of future generations of very bright children. Your time and effort is not going unnoticed. Bravo!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
