St. Johnsbury School

Summary:

St. Johnsbury School is a public elementary school serving 702 students in grades PK-8 in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont, which is part of the Kingdom East Unified Union School District #64. While the school has a diverse student population, with higher percentages of African American and Hispanic students compared to nearby schools, its academic performance lags behind state averages and nearby schools on key metrics.

St. Johnsbury School's test scores are generally lower than the state averages across all grade levels and subjects, with its 3rd grade English Language Arts proficiency rate at 46.15% compared to the state's 48.91%, and its 3rd grade Mathematics proficiency rate at 26.92% compared to the state's 37.19%. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Vermont elementary schools, with a ranking of 77 out of 113 schools in the 2022-2023 school year, and has received a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past few years. Additionally, St. Johnsbury School has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 51.13% to 56.03% over the past three school years, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools such as Burke Town School, Sutton Village School, and Waterford Elementary School.

The challenges faced by St. Johnsbury School may be unique to its specific context and student population, as the nearby schools generally perform better on various metrics. While the school has a higher percentage of non-white students compared to the nearby schools, its performance on academic measures does not seem to be correlated with this diversity, raising questions about the school's ability to effectively support and meet the needs of its diverse student population. Addressing these challenges will likely require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that takes into account the unique needs and circumstances of the school's student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Where to start... as a public school it's expected that the learning, environment, etc would be relatively subpar. However, as a high school student, looking back on my years as a St. J School student, they were some of the worst of my life. This school struggles with containing bullying and promoting a positive environment and community in a real way without being forceful or condescending. I'd recommend if you're interested in sending your child here that you find somewhere else to send them. Close Quote

Open Quote This school has a significant problem with bullying. The professional attitude of some of the teachers is very disappointing. If you have a child with an IEP or 504 I urge you to seriously review the information provided by these sites. The statistics are not good. Close Quote

Open Quote Worst possible school you could send your child to. I have a child with an IEP. I spent a great deal as well as the school we transferred from making sure that it would be a good choice for my child. I was seriously mislead about the schools special education department. Also we experienced bullying issues. Oh and the free lunch...there are days when there is not enough food because if you don't like what mom packs you why not get a free lunch too. So much for the kids who really need the lunch. Seriously research the area. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
