John Handley High

Summary:

John Handley High is a public high school in Winchester, Virginia, serving 1,384 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Winchester City Public Schools district, which is ranked 103 out of 130 districts in the state.

John Handley High has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 38.51% White, 10.62% African American, 40.39% Hispanic, 3.47% Asian, and 5.92% two or more races. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by SOL test scores, is generally lower than the state and district averages, particularly in Algebra I, Biology, and English Reading. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with female students, Hispanic students, and students with disabilities ranking lower compared to their male and White counterparts. Additionally, John Handley High has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 77.02% in the 2022-2023 school year, which is significantly higher than nearby schools like Skyline High and Strasburg High.

Over the past decade, John Handley High's statewide ranking has steadily declined, from a high of 80 out of 322 Virginia high schools in 2013-2014 to a low of 270 out of 326 in 2022-2023. This suggests that the school's academic performance has been declining relative to other schools in the state, potentially due to the significant socioeconomic challenges faced by its student population. To address these issues, the school and the Winchester City Public Schools district may need to focus on targeted interventions, resource allocation, and a greater emphasis on equity and inclusion to improve educational outcomes for all students at John Handley High.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Students in this school run wild. There have been many fights throughout the school year. Students are allowed to transfer from one class to another for any reason they want which makes for poor academic settings. Administration does not hold anyone accountable except for the poor teachers that have no control over who is put into their classes. School board policies have created a sinking ship. Send your child somewhere else. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
