Holland Elementary

Summary:

Holland Elementary is a public elementary school located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 460. The school is part of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools district, which is ranked 27th out of 130 districts in Virginia and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Holland Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to the nearby schools, with a higher percentage of African American (39.57%) and Hispanic (18.04%) students. Additionally, the school has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (95.22% in 2022-2023), indicating a higher proportion of students from low-income families. However, Holland Elementary has a lower student-teacher ratio (11.1 in 2022-2023) and higher per-student spending ($13,985 in 2020-2021) compared to the nearby schools, which could suggest more individualized attention and resources available for the students.

While Holland Elementary's academic performance, as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores, is generally lower than the Virginia Beach City Public Schools district and the state of Virginia averages, the school has shown some strengths, such as higher proficiency rates in 5th-grade mathematics and 4th-grade reading. Interestingly, the nearby Rosemont Forest Elementary, which has a more diverse student population than the other nearby schools, performs better academically than Holland Elementary across most subject areas and grade levels, suggesting that factors beyond just racial diversity, such as socioeconomic status and school resources, may play a significant role in academic achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is a great school with great teachers and the best administration anyone could ask for! I was really concerned about my kids going here after seeing their test scores and reading reviews on greatschools.com. Maybe the school used to be bad, but that is not the case. My kids have been going there for 2 years and they love it. They love their teachers and they love being Huskies! The teachers are truly passionate about their work and they care about all the children and want to see them succeed. I have had to have many parent teacher conferences over the two years trying to find ways for my kids to be successful and implementing different tactics that we have come up with together. The administrative staff, the nurse, the lunch ladies, and Mr. Burke make every kid at Holland feel special and that is more than I could have ever asked for. I would not go to any other school in Virginia Beach even if I had the choice. =) Close Quote

Open Quote When I was in second grade at this school, I would constantly get bullied. I know you might think it's not a big deal because it's elementary, but my family had to move to a different district because of it. I would always get jumped in the bathroom, hit on the bus, and taunted in class. No body would do anything because they were too scared of the kids families. The kid on the bus was the bus drivers SON, and I would always ask her to check the security tapes, but she refused every time. I feel racism played a part in this. I would go to the office to report this but they would tell me to go back to class... not even the police would do anything, except threaten my mom with jail if she kept me out of school any longer. Long story short, it's terrible to handle with bullying. If you're looking into schools, I would recommend Grassfield Elementary in Chesapeake. There's too many good aspects about that school to explain here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
