Huguenot High

Summary:

Huguenot High is a public high school in Richmond, Virginia, serving 1,551 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Richmond City Public Schools district, which is ranked 113 out of 130 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating.

Huguenot High consistently ranks in the bottom 10-15% of Virginia high schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's performance on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests is significantly lower than the state and district averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Huguenot High's proficiency rates were 40.63% in 10th grade Writing, 49.62% in 11th grade Writing, and 68.57% in 12th grade Writing, compared to the state averages of 67.92%, 79.32%, and 58.51%, respectively. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American and Hispanic students performing much worse than their peers statewide.

Huguenot High has a very high percentage of students (87.94% in 2022-2023) eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. This is significantly higher than the state and district averages, and likely contributes to the school's academic challenges. While Huguenot High spends more per student ($10,184 in 2020-2021) compared to the state average, this does not translate into better academic outcomes. Nearby schools, such as Richmond Community High and John Marshall High, also struggle academically, but some schools outside the district, like Douglas S. Freeman High, perform significantly better.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Come on Huguenot HS. Support your school and show the system what you are made of. Look George Wythe has a 3 star rating, and we know we all know people who go there, but we need to support Huguenot. We are about to get a new look and I say let's bring our A game and step it up with the grading overall for the school in all areas! Band get ready to make this school be known for what sound we make, and "Bring it", and let's make other schools work harder to compete against us in our different sports we are GREAT in, finally let's just do what we do and best... Show them what Trojans are...That's right >>>>>>> WARRIORS in the classroom, in competition whether it's sports or bringing the sound that will, I say, will... Ring throughout Richmond, VA.

Make your mark now... Because of the 1,000 plus students going to Huguenot HS George Wythe has under a 1,000 and they are beating Huguenot.

It's up to you, make your move and show George Wythe up, and better yet knock it all out in RVA with showing up all the high schools in the city/cities, and counties beyond. I'm just saying, your choice. You can do this! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
