Unity Reed High

Summary:

Unity Reed High is a public magnet high school in Manassas, Virginia, serving 2,316 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Prince William County Public Schools district, which is ranked 39 out of 130 school districts in Virginia.

While Unity Reed High has a diverse student population, with a growing Hispanic student body, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Virginia high schools, maintaining a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade. The school struggles to perform well across various student subgroups, ranking particularly low for Asian, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students, as well as for female students, low-income students, and students with disabilities. Unity Reed High's proficiency rates on state assessments are generally lower than the district and state averages, with particularly poor performance in Geometry, Earth Science, and Virginia/US History.

When compared to other nearby magnet high schools, such as Charles J. Colgan Senior High, Battlefield High, and Patriot High, Unity Reed High consistently underperforms on statewide rankings and academic measures. These other magnet schools serve more diverse student populations and achieve higher levels of academic success, suggesting that Unity Reed High may need to address its socioeconomic factors and ensure more effective utilization of resources to improve educational outcomes for all its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Don't go completely on the numbers. This is a great school with caring staff who push the students to do well. Our diversity is our strength. Close Quote

Open Quote One of the most misunderstood schools in PWCS. IB is challenging. Diversity is everywhere at the school (student flyers and posters, dances, assemblies, field trips, etc.). SJHS students may be more prepared for the job market than other students because a lot of them already have jobs to help their families and the community. A strong family atmosphere among staff and students. Close Quote

Open Quote As a former student of SJHS (just graduated last year) I can say this school is outstanding. And yes there may be many students, but all teachers in all subjects will gladly stay after school as long as you need them! The IB programme is great, and really prepares you for college level classes. Some students complain about too much work, but in the end they all admit it was worth it. This school is very safe, and for all the time I was there, there was never a threat to any student's security. All (okay...most) students are very kind, and all the teachers are highly qualified. A student will never fail if they try, because you are given plenty of opportunities. This school is not based around tests, but the overall knowledge and understanding of what they are learning. I would highly recommend this school to any high schooler willing to work hard in order to be successful. Close Quote

Open Quote This school has too many students and not enough teachers to properly train and educate students who are not receiving or processing the learning they need to know.
My child's class has over 500 people. If my child is going to receive the proper education for the understanding of being able to show proficiency in an area of lack there needs to be a system in place that not only helps in learning the material needed to pass, but also being influenced to do extra learning at home instead of doing the bare minimum of homework, then watching tv or playing on the computer. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
