Thurgood Marshall Elementary

Summary:

Thurgood Marshall Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Manassas, Virginia, serving 698 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Prince William County Public Schools district, which is ranked 39 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 4-star rating.

Thurgood Marshall Elementary consistently outperforms the state and district averages on SOL (Standards of Learning) assessments, with proficiency rates significantly higher than the state and district in Mathematics, English Reading, and Science. The school's performance is particularly strong for African American and multi-racial students, ranking 36th and 13th, respectively, out of Virginia elementary schools in those subgroups. However, the school's performance for disabled and military-connected students is more variable, indicating a need for additional support and resources in those areas.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Enterprise Elementary, Kyle R. Wilson Elementary, and Bennett Elementary, Thurgood Marshall Elementary outperforms them in academic achievement, despite having a lower percentage of students from low-income families. This suggests that factors beyond socioeconomic status, such as effective teaching and strong leadership, contribute to the school's success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Except for the time the school librarian force fed a gay romance picture book to the entire school during morning video announcements (Google Marshall Elementary and Prince and Knight), my childrens' experience at Marshall was very good. The teachers are excellent and dedicated. My children attended Marshall from 2016 - 2022. Close Quote

Open Quote As with any academic settings, it's a joint effort that requires both the teachers and parents working together. Two years ago when my husband and I was looking to buy our family home, we looked at Arlington, Ashburn, Crystal City, and Manassas VA before deciding on Manassas VA. We visited all of the local Elementary and Middle schools, and was impressed with the test results and level of professional teachers at Marshall Elementary. The ranking of this school does not represent the actual quality of education and development your child will received. We both are Full-time Doctoral Candidates at George Washington University, Ashburn Campus; and work full time for the Federal Government. Our daughter is now in the advance academic program, and after two years of taking the special program for kids who are interested in learning another language, she is now fluent in Spanish. We are VERY PLEASED.....with this school and highly encourage all parents to look at the history of the school academic successes before making the decision. If you do decide to move to Marshall Elementary, you and your child will be very pleased with the outcome. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
