Granby Elementary

Summary:

Granby Elementary is a public elementary school in Norfolk, Virginia, serving 464 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Norfolk City Public Schools district, which is ranked 105 out of 130 districts in Virginia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Granby Elementary faces significant challenges, with a student population that is 60.99% African American and over 99% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. The school consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Virginia elementary schools, with proficiency rates that are significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. This achievement gap is particularly pronounced for African American and low-socioeconomic status students. Interestingly, nearby schools like Larchmont Elementary and Sewells Point Elementary demonstrate much stronger academic performance, with proficiency rates that are 20-40 percentage points higher than Granby Elementary.

Despite Granby Elementary's higher per-student spending level ($10,773 in 2020-2021) compared to the surrounding schools, this additional funding does not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes for the students. The school's relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12.5 to 13.6 over the past few years, suggests that factors beyond just class size may be contributing to the school's academic challenges. Addressing the root causes of these disparities, such as equitable resource allocation, targeted interventions, and community engagement, will be crucial for improving educational outcomes at Granby Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Don't let the numbers fool you. Granby Elementary has great teachers and a caring principal. The teachers take time to individualize their education for each student. The principal knows each student by name and cares about them all. They have great clubs and resources - chess club, robotics club, drum club, drama club, violin, Girls on the run, and many more. There are frequent field trips , plenty of school dances, movie nights, and community education programs. They even have lessons in the school garden. It is economically , racially, and culturally diverse just like the community in which it is located. My child is growing and learning here. Go bulldogs ! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
