Weems Elementary

Summary:

Weems Elementary is a public elementary school in Manassas, Virginia, serving 566 students in grades PK-4. The school is part of the Manassas City Public Schools district, which is ranked 122 out of 130 districts in Virginia and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Weems Elementary stands out for its significantly higher Hispanic student population, ranging from 73.68% to 75.75% over the past three school years, compared to the more diverse racial mix at nearby schools like Jennie Dean Elementary and Baldwin Elementary. Academically, Weems Elementary consistently underperforms compared to state and district averages in standardized test scores for Mathematics and English Reading across grades 3 and 4. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Weems Elementary's 3rd grade Math proficiency rate was 33.63%, compared to the Manassas City Public Schools average of 45.77% and the Virginia state average of 70.11%. The school's statewide ranking has also seen a steady decline, dropping from 263 out of 1099 Virginia elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 979 out of 1114 in 2023-2024, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger in the most recent years.

Weems Elementary's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 75.8% to 98.5% over the past three school years, indicates a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. This likely contributes to the school's academic challenges, as research has shown that economic disadvantage can be a significant barrier to student achievement. Addressing the needs of this population, both academically and socioeconomically, should be a priority for the school and district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Being related to one of the teachers at this school, and having been a student at Weems in the past, I can say that this is easily the worst school in the city. With incompetent administrators and a complete lack of concern for teaching students what they need to know in order to pass state tests, I can say that my children will never go to Weems Elementary school as long as they are in school. Another problem with this school is that, although a vast majority of the students cannot read at grade level, the administrators still feel the need to try to label every child as "gifted" and put them into special programs, rather than try to teach them how to do the basics, like learning to read. Overall, think long and hard about your child's future before sending him or her to Weems. Without recieving a basic elementary school foundation, this could mean no college education, or future job. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
