Hillsboro Charter Academy

Summary:

Hillsboro Charter Academy is a public charter elementary school in Purcellville, Virginia, serving 143 students in grades K-5. The school consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in Virginia, with exceptional academic performance that significantly exceeds the averages of Loudoun County Public Schools and the state of Virginia.

Hillsboro Charter Academy's students demonstrate remarkable proficiency in standardized tests, with 95.83% of 5th-graders achieving proficiency in both Mathematics and English Reading, compared to 81% and 80.52% for Loudoun County, respectively. However, the school's student population is predominantly white, with only 2.8% African American, 1.4% Hispanic, and 2.8% Asian students. Additionally, the school has a very low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at just 2.1%, suggesting a relatively affluent student population.

While Hillsboro Charter Academy's academic success is commendable, the lack of racial and socioeconomic diversity may be an area for the school to address. Nearby schools, such as Catoctin Elementary, Lucketts Elementary, and Hamilton Elementary, tend to have more diverse student populations. Investigating the school's curriculum, teaching methods, and other practices could provide valuable insights into the drivers of its exceptional academic performance and help the school create a more inclusive learning environment.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Students start together through the Kindergarten cohort. Special needs students don't always receive consistent individualized help. It's a small school however oversight is lacking where it matters. It was not a welcoming environment and when we raised concerns about student safety we were treated disparately. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
