Frederick Douglass Elementary

Summary:

Frederick Douglass Elementary is a public elementary school in Leesburg, Virginia, serving 549 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Loudoun County Public Schools district. While the district is highly ranked, Frederick Douglass Elementary has consistently underperformed, ranking in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools in recent years.

The school's academic performance is significantly lower than the Loudoun County and Virginia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 3rd grade math proficiency rate was 55%, compared to 78.75% for Loudoun County and 70.11% for Virginia. Additionally, the school has a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students (58.83%) and a more diverse student population, with higher percentages of Hispanic (38.25%) and African American (10.75%) students compared to nearby schools like Belmont Station Elementary, Newton-Lee Elementary, and John W. Tolbert Junior Elementary.

The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Asian students ranking in the bottom 20% of Virginia elementary schools and Hispanic students ranking in the bottom 10%. Additionally, the school's male students generally perform better than its female students. These factors, combined with the school's declining performance over the past decade, suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes at Frederick Douglass Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote So many teachers leaving their job, too much turn over of admin staff,
No discipline. Kids with behavioral issues are not given time off and this is frustrating for fellow students and possibly teachers.
This school needs strong team. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
