Summary:

Carter G. Woodson Middle is a public middle school in Hopewell, Virginia, serving 826 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Hopewell City Public Schools district, which is ranked 127 out of 130 districts in Virginia and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Carter G. Woodson Middle has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (65.62%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 29.65% to 86.75% African American. The school's standardized test scores are consistently lower than state and district averages, with proficiency rates in SOL/Mathematics for grades 6-8 ranging from 21.05% to 32.88%, compared to state averages of 50.1% to 59.41%. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Virginia middle schools, placing it in the bottom 10% statewide. The school's performance is particularly low for African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students.

When compared to nearby schools, such as J.E.J. Moore Middle, which is located about 9.5 miles away, Carter G. Woodson Middle is underperforming significantly. Despite the school's low performance, it has a relatively high per-student spending level, ranging from $7,384 to $8,101 in recent years, and a relatively favorable student-teacher ratio, suggesting that the issues may not be solely a lack of funding or staffing. Given the school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged and minority students, addressing the potential impact of socioeconomic and cultural factors on academic achievement may be crucial for improving the school's performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
