Pinchbeck Elementary

Summary:

Pinchbeck Elementary is a public elementary school in Richmond, Virginia, serving 522 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Henrico County Public Schools district, which is ranked 88 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Pinchbeck has a relatively diverse student population, with 54.79% White, 12.07% African American, 21.46% Hispanic, and 7.66% Asian students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores, is generally below the Henrico County and Virginia state averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, Pinchbeck's 3rd grade math proficiency rate was 68.6%, compared to 65.93% for Henrico County and 70.11% for Virginia. Additionally, Pinchbeck's statewide ranking has dropped from 418 out of 1,097 Virginia elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 594 out of 1,114 in 2023-2024. The school also has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 50% in 2022-2023, which is higher than nearby schools like Short Pump Elementary (22.4%) and Tuckahoe Elementary (11.54%).

Pinchbeck's academic performance is generally lower than the nearby schools, such as Short Pump Elementary, Three Chopt Elementary, and Tuckahoe Elementary, which have significantly higher proficiency rates in math, science, and reading, with some schools ranking among the top 10% of Virginia elementary schools. The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students at Pinchbeck may be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance, as research has shown that students from low-income families often face additional challenges that can impact their academic achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My family has had an excellent experience at Pinchbeck. We have two kids that are now in 3rd and 4th grade, and they love it! The staff is excellent and the parents are involved. There is a fine balance of social, economic, and cultural diversity which is an education in the real world. There are other schools in western Henrico County which may have higher test scores, but that alone is not a good measure of a school. Close Quote

Open Quote graduated from there in 2008 (the year they had their best scores). I was bullied a lot, not just by the other students but also by most of my teachers (especially in 5th grade). When I went there it was a mostly white school and if that had played a part in my misery, I won't point the finger. Frankly this school did nothing but limit progress, my mother had taught me multiplication, division, addition and subtraction by the time I was enrolled there in the second grade but I wasn't allowed to use it. My teacher had made me use sticks to add and subtract and yelled at me when I did it through the normal numerical way that was apparently too advanced for my age. Don't enroll at Pinchbeck, the few teachers that were good at teaching have all moved to other schools (from what I've heard) and from the test scores it seems this school has sunk farther. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
