Laburnum Elementary

Summary:

Laburnum Elementary is a public elementary school in Richmond, Virginia, serving 456 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Henrico County Public Schools district, which is ranked 88 out of 130 districts in Virginia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Laburnum Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Virginia elementary schools, with significantly lower academic performance than the district and state averages on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 46.38% of 3rd graders, 25% of 4th graders, and 29.09% of 5th graders were proficient or better in SOL Mathematics, compared to 65.93%, 66.24%, and 66.47% for Henrico County, respectively. The school also has a very high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 88.16% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, which is significantly higher than the district and state averages.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Chamberlayne Elementary, Harold Macon Ratcliffe Elementary, and Lakeside Elementary, Laburnum Elementary generally performs worse academically and serves a higher percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. While Laburnum has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 12.3 students per teacher, this does not appear to be a significant factor in its academic performance, as the nearby schools have similar or slightly higher ratios. Addressing the unique challenges faced by Laburnum's student population, such as limited access to educational resources and higher levels of stress and trauma, will be crucial in improving the school's performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son is 3 years old and started headstart program in Jan. His teacher is very nice and patient with him. The administration is TRASH. They were bullying my 3 year old about his hair. I would expect that from a child, but not the people I leave him with to protect him. No wonder they are ranked so Low. My son has not been there a whole 5 months and I found their bullying to students tactics and smiling in your face when u pick them up. They will not Mold my child into their bullying tactics. Find a new Administration. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
