Jacob L. Adams Elementary

Summary:

Jacob L. Adams Elementary is a public elementary school in Richmond, Virginia, serving 464 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Henrico County Public Schools district.

While the school's student population is predominantly African American (81.9%), it consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Virginia elementary schools, with significantly lower performance on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests compared to the Henrico County and Virginia state averages. The school also has a very high percentage of students (over 89%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. Additionally, the student-teacher ratio at Jacob L. Adams Elementary is relatively high, ranging from 14.5 to 17.3 students per teacher, which may contribute to the academic struggles.

The nearby schools in the Henrico County district, such as Harold Macon Ratcliffe Elementary and Harvie Elementary, also face academic challenges, but Jacob L. Adams Elementary consistently ranks lower than these schools, suggesting that it faces unique obstacles. The school's performance on SOL tests has been declining over the past several years, with proficiency rates dropping significantly in both mathematics and reading across all grade levels, highlighting the persistent racial achievement gap in the education system and the need for targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Bittersweet! Principals and office staff pretty good. As always there are some teachers that just were not born to teach. It should be mandatory or it probably is that all teachers take psychology classes. Some of the younger teachers seem worn out or not passionate. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
