Henrico High

Summary:

Henrico High is a public magnet high school located in Richmond, Virginia, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,348 students. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 10.76% White, 69.07% African American, 5.49% Hispanic, 10.98% Asian, and 3.71% two or more races. Henrico High is part of the Henrico County Public Schools district, which is ranked 88 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Henrico High's academic performance, as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores, is generally lower compared to the Henrico County Public Schools district and the state of Virginia. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Henrico High's proficiency rates in subjects like Geometry (51.43%), Biology (42.75%), and VA and US History (14.12%) are significantly below the district and state averages. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Asian and White students performing relatively well, while African American and Hispanic students, as well as low socioeconomic status and disabled students, struggle. Henrico High has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Virginia high schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for most years.

Henrico High's extremely high free and reduced-price lunch rates, reaching nearly 90% in recent years, suggest that the school serves a predominantly economically disadvantaged student population. When compared to nearby schools, such as Open High, a public school in the Richmond City Public Schools district, and Mechanicsville High and Atlee High, both in the Hanover County Public Schools district, Henrico High's performance is generally lower. These factors highlight the need for targeted interventions and support to address the school's academic challenges and improve outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a student here at Henrico, I would say that much of this information about the test scores is untrue. We have better than average test scores and they are getting better. This school also offers two programs which are the IB program and the Center for the Arts program. Which both are extremely good. The Center for the Arts students are amazing at what they do, while all the IB students are extremely intelligent. I feel that this information doesn't include the center kids at all. Even without the IB or Center for the Arts students we are a smart bunch of students. The teachers are amazing and the school itself is amazing (or at least soon to be with the grant we got to renovate the school, and trust me it is a lot of money). Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
