Paul Burbank Elementary

Summary:

Paul Burbank Elementary is a public elementary school in Hampton, Virginia, serving 443 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Hampton City Public Schools district. The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American students and a very high rate of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a student population with lower socioeconomic status.

Despite the school's challenges, the data reveals several key insights. Paul Burbank Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools, with a 1-2 star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's academic performance, as measured by SOL test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly for male students and African American students. Additionally, the school's per-student spending is lower and its student-teacher ratio is higher than some nearby schools, such as Captain John Smith Elementary and Aberdeen Elementary.

Comparing Paul Burbank Elementary to other schools within the same district reveals that some, such as Barron Elementary and William Mason Cooper Elementary, consistently outperform Paul Burbank Elementary and the district/state averages. These comparisons suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to address the achievement gaps at Paul Burbank Elementary and improve overall educational outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have two children at Paul Burbank and have been fairly pleased with the teachers and staff. The school is old, but the atmosphere at the school is really great. The teachers, although dealing with large numbers of students, work very hard to give each child what they need to succeed. Parent involvement is truly critical and this school's parents are fabulous! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
