Jane H. Bryan Elementary

Summary:

Jane H. Bryan Elementary is a public elementary school in Hampton, Virginia, serving 376 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Hampton City Public Schools district, which is ranked 56 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 3-star rating.

Jane H. Bryan Elementary faces several challenges, including a significantly higher percentage of African American students (70.21%) compared to surrounding schools, and consistently ranking in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools over the past 10 years. The school's proficiency rates in Mathematics, English Reading, and Science are generally lower than the Hampton City Public Schools and Virginia state averages. While the school's male students and African American students perform better than the overall student population, the school's white students and students with disabilities perform worse.

Nearby schools, such as Mary S. Peake Elementary and Samuel P. Langley Elementary, have higher overall performance and rankings compared to Jane H. Bryan Elementary. These schools have a more diverse student population and generally higher proficiency rates in core academic subjects. However, Jane H. Bryan Elementary's relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending may be positive factors in supporting student learning, and continued efforts to address the school's performance gaps and support its diverse student population will be crucial for improving outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school, especially the Principal does not care about the students. I was told by the Vice Principal, who is now the Principal this year, that she did not have time to deal with my child she had more important things to do. I even complained to the school board about her and they still promoted her to Principal. They suspend students for anything, even children with special needs. I have been told again this year that they do not have time to spend on my child.
Something needs to be done!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
