Deer Park Elementary

Summary:

Deer Park Elementary is a public elementary school in Centreville, Virginia, serving 567 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, which is ranked 41 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Deer Park Elementary has a relatively diverse student population, with 45.68% White, 9.52% African American, 23.46% Hispanic, and 15.7% Asian students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores, is generally lower than the Fairfax County Public Schools and Virginia state averages across various grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Deer Park's 3rd grade math proficiency rate was 58.57%, compared to 71.31% for Fairfax County and 70.11% for Virginia. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating below-average performance compared to other Virginia elementary schools.

When compared to other nearby elementary schools, such as Poplar Tree Elementary and Little River Elementary, Deer Park Elementary generally underperforms. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Asian students performing relatively well, but White students and students with disabilities performing poorly. These challenges suggest that Deer Park Elementary may need to implement targeted interventions and support to improve academic outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school has declined significantly and use to be a top rated school. We ultimately had to pull our children because of systematic failure and place them in private school at considerable expense and hardship to my family. This school fights to not implement IEPs by providing questionable testing, testing results and testing conclusions. These results are easily refuted by outside testing by professionals but ignored by the Deerpark IEP panel. You will get the "your child is average" and no services warranted. But you know better as a parent. Good luck. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
