Aldrin Elementary

Summary:

Aldrin Elementary is a public elementary school located in Reston, Virginia, serving grades PK-6 with a student population of 465. The school is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, which is ranked 41 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Aldrin Elementary consistently outperforms the Fairfax County and Virginia state averages in standardized test scores, ranking in the top 25% of Virginia elementary schools. The school's academic performance is generally stronger than nearby schools, with the exception of Great Falls Elementary and Forestville Elementary, which are also high-performing schools in the Fairfax County district. Aldrin's diverse student population, strong resource allocation, and low student-teacher ratio of 11.1 appear to be key factors in its success. However, the school may need to focus on improving the performance of its Asian and Hispanic student subgroups to ensure equitable outcomes for all students.

Aldrin Elementary has a relatively low percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients (20.22% in 2022-2023), suggesting that the school serves a more affluent student population, which may contribute to its strong academic outcomes. The school's per-student spending of $14,011 in the 2020-2021 school year is higher than the state average, indicating that Aldrin may have access to more resources and funding to support student learning.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Aldrin Elementary is a wonderful school with excellent administration and a family feel. The office staff knows every child. There are so many wonderful teachers, extremely high parent involvement, and an amazing PTA. The only criticism is that it is highly segregated and the school is not transparent about how children are placed in classrooms. They seek to maximize their limited specialists (special ed, ESOL, etc.) by concentrating kids together and isolating the advanced kids. These kids could be better integrated in order to provide a better experience for ALL students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
