Terraset Elementary

Summary:

Terraset Elementary is a public elementary school in Reston, Virginia, serving 620 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, which is ranked 41 out of 130 school districts in Virginia.

While Terraset Elementary has a relatively diverse student population, with 48.71% White, 26.45% Hispanic, 8.39% African American, and 6.77% Asian students, its academic performance, as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores, is generally lower than the Fairfax County and Virginia state averages across various grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, Terraset's 3rd grade math proficiency rate was 47.89%, compared to 71.31% for Fairfax County and 70.11% for Virginia. Additionally, Terraset's statewide ranking has fluctuated, ranging from 369th out of 1,103 Virginia elementary schools in 2020-2021 to 591st out of 1,114 in 2023-2024, placing the school in the middle to lower range of Virginia elementary schools.

Interestingly, Terraset Elementary's academic performance is lower than nearby schools, such as Aldrin Elementary, Crossfield Elementary, and Sunrise Valley Elementary, which have higher SOL test scores and better statewide rankings. The school also has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 29.35% in 2022-2023, which is higher than some of the nearby schools. These factors, along with the significant disparities in performance between Terraset's student subgroups, suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to address the achievement gaps and improve the educational outcomes for all students at Terraset Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Terraset is one of the best kept secrets in Fairfax County! It is a fantastic school with a strong focus on both academics and character education. The principal and assistant principal set a wonderful tone -- children from all backgrounds are welcome. Administration says what they mean -- they promise to meet each child where they are, and they do. They are proactive in obtaining extra resources for kids who need extra help and supports. The IEP process has been smooth and the staff very accommodating. Lots of very experienced, first rate teachers, though I wish the classes were smaller (up to 28/class). Close Quote

Open Quote Involved principal and teachers. PTA is very supportive and involved. Kids seem to have fun and to be excited to go to school. My first grader is always happy at the end of the day and shares fun things he has learned, even though he claims to "hate" school. The school has a very welcoming environment and is very academically supportive. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
