Riverside Elementary

Summary:

Riverside Elementary is a public elementary school located in Alexandria, Virginia, serving grades PK-6 with a total enrollment of 732 students. The school is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, which is ranked 41 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Riverside Elementary faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools. The school has a much higher percentage of Hispanic students (44.26%) and a lower percentage of White students (17.08%) than the surrounding schools. Academically, Riverside Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Virginia elementary schools, with performance on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests significantly lower than the Fairfax County and Virginia state averages. The school also has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 73.63% to 97.01% over the past three school years, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools.

While Riverside Elementary struggles academically, some of the nearby schools, such as Waynewood Elementary and Fort Hunt Elementary, perform significantly better on SOL tests and have higher statewide rankings. This highlights the disparities in educational outcomes within the same school district. Riverside Elementary's declining statewide ranking and achievement gaps between student subgroups suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to improve educational outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote a new administration in 2015-16 has already made amazing changes in the atmosphere at this school. test scores in low ave populations have increased. teacher retention has been amazing. class size is small. parent involvement has been bolstered by an amazing PTA and core of volunteers. my kids are happy and are learning and achieving. its going to take time to change the perception and attitudes about this school, but we are determined to do it. I believe you will get out what you invest. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
