Ravensworth Elementary

Summary:

Ravensworth Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Springfield, Virginia, serving 601 students in grades PK-6. As part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, Ravensworth has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with higher percentages of Hispanic and Asian students.

Academically, Ravensworth's students generally perform better than the Fairfax County and Virginia state averages in both Mathematics and English Reading assessments, with 4th and 5th-grade students standing out with significantly higher proficiency rates. However, the school's 6th-grade students underperform in Mathematics compared to the district and state. Ravensworth's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 265th to 593rd out of over 1,100 Virginia elementary schools, and its SchoolDigger rating has varied from 2 to 4 stars, generally lower than the high-performing nearby schools like West Springfield Elementary and Keene Mill Elementary.

While Ravensworth's Asian and English Language Learner students perform relatively well, the school's Hispanic and Low Socioeconomic Status students perform below average, suggesting the need for targeted interventions to ensure equitable outcomes. Additionally, Ravensworth outperforms lower-performing nearby schools, such as Annandale Terrace Elementary, Crestwood Elementary, Lynbrook Elementary, and Braddock Elementary, which struggle with significantly lower academic proficiency rates.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son attends this school and receives special education. The professionals at this school are both caring and well suited to take care of my son and we have been lucky to have been placed here even though its not the closest school. The Vice Principle has been fabulous to work with and he is very involved. The school is in the middle of renovations as well and they are doing a great job of keeping a safe and friendly environment while under construction. Close Quote

Open Quote I don't know why the average is 2 stars...I LOVE THIS SCHOOL. The principal, Mrs. Salata is AWESOME. The Vice Principal, Mr. Paper, is also great; they are both very hands on with both the students and the parents. I have loved all of my sons' teachers. Both of my sons have IEP's and I am very happy with the education, approach and services offered by the school. Parents can be as active as they would like through multiple volunteer opportunities. Lastly, there are pepole who MOVE to this school district because of Ravensworth's SPANISH IMMERSION education opportunity where children are taught in Spanish to "immerse" them in the language. I believe families who choose this education track have to apply to be accepted into it, and their children are taught 1/2 in Spanish and 1/2 in English. If my boys weren't special ed, I would have LOVED to sign them up for this. All in all, Ravensworth is a GREAT school. My children had attended two other schools before Ravensworth but Ravensworth is my favorite. :) Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
