Parklawn Elementary

Summary:

Parklawn Elementary is a public elementary school in Alexandria, Virginia, serving 902 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, which is ranked 41 out of 130 school districts in Virginia.

Parklawn Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, with a significant Hispanic (32.37%) and Asian (21.73%) representation, along with 17.74% African American and 25.28% White students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) assessments, is generally lower than the Fairfax County and Virginia state averages across various grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Parklawn's 3rd-grade math proficiency rate was 65.13%, compared to 71.31% for Fairfax County and 70.11% for Virginia. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools and has received a 0 or 1 out of 5 stars rating from SchoolDigger, indicating below-average performance.

Parklawn Elementary's challenges may be linked to its high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 91.46% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. This is significantly higher than the nearby schools, such as Sleepy Hollow Elementary and Beech Tree Elementary, which have free/reduced-price lunch rates ranging from 42.01% to 95.62%. Addressing the underlying issues, such as the high percentage of students from low-income families and the school's diverse racial composition, through targeted interventions and support programs could be crucial in improving student outcomes and closing the achievement gap.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Great school within the community. The test scores are deceiving. English is a second language to most. There should be another method to test these children. They are very bright. The Principal is the best. He takes pride in his position and loves the kids. Very active PTA. Close Quote

Open Quote This School needs some guidance on how you speak to children. I have consistently witnessed children being talked down to and screamed at. This is not acceptable behavior for adults. If you can avoid it DO NOT send your Children to this school. This school may have been great at one point in time but it is far from it now. What a shame. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
