While London Towne Elementary has a significantly more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a student body that is 45.89% Hispanic, 23.65% White, 12.18% Asian, and 11.19% African American, its academic performance as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores is generally lower than the nearby schools and the Fairfax County and Virginia state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in SOL Mathematics ranged from 39.73% (5th grade) to 60.92% (6th grade), compared to Fairfax County's range of 62.12% to 73.75% and Virginia's range of 59.41% to 71.16%. Additionally, London Towne Elementary's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from a high of 464 out of 1,110 Virginia elementary schools in 2013-2014 to a low of 883 out of 1,114 in 2023-2024, placing the school in the bottom 20% of Virginia elementary schools.

The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Asian students performing better than Hispanic and White students. Furthermore, London Towne Elementary has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 55.38% in the 2022-2023 school year, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools, such as Virginia Run Elementary (9.69%) and Union Mill Elementary (13.82%). These factors suggest that the school serves a more economically disadvantaged population, which may contribute to its lower academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We love London Towne Elementary. There is always this wonderful warm, friendly feeling when you walk into the building. Staff really seem to care about each student. Teacher to student ratio is low. They have lots of resources for both the excelling and the struggling students. The teachers and students are diverse. Just a wonderful all round school. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
