Herndon Elementary

Summary:

Herndon Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Herndon, Virginia, serving 808 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, which is ranked 41 out of 130 school districts in Virginia.

Herndon Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 10% of Virginia elementary schools. The school's performance on state assessments is significantly lower than the Fairfax County and Virginia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, particularly for Hispanic, English Language Learner, and low socioeconomic status student subgroups. In contrast, the school's White and Asian student subgroups perform relatively better, ranking in the middle to upper third of Virginia elementary schools. Nearby schools in the Fairfax County district, such as Dranesville Elementary and Lake Anne Elementary, as well as schools outside the district like Forest Grove Elementary and Sully Elementary, generally outperform Herndon Elementary on academic measures.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio and increased per-student spending in recent years, Herndon Elementary's academic performance has remained stagnant or declined over time. The school's high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, ranging from 66.34% to 73.23% in recent years, is likely a contributing factor to its academic challenges. Addressing these disparities and improving overall academic outcomes will be crucial for the school's future success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This poor school has gone from bad to worse. Our kids have been there for five years and each year has been a new low. The town is wonderful. This school is a failure. It used to have a French Immersion program which attracted bright students. But the demographics changed and now they have a Spanish program because the majority of students don't speak English. The students come from very poor families and it is now Title I.
Most parents HATE the principal. There have been parents accusing her publicly of lying and deceiving the parents. There has been an exodus of the bright, capable students because of it.
It's too bad. It used to be a nice school but now people can't even sell their house if it is close to the school because it is one of the lowest schools in the STATE. There are some really involved parents who live at the school but they aren't making much progress. It is the same with the teachers. There are a few good ones but the best teachers left with the best students.
The school is also over crowded. Kids are stuffed in trailers by the playground. It's old and needs renovations, too. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
