Forestdale Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (43.16%) and Asian (15.1%) students compared to nearby schools. Its performance on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests is significantly lower than the Fairfax County and Virginia averages across all grade levels and subject areas. Additionally, Forestdale Elementary has a high percentage of students (63.06%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-income families compared to the nearby schools.

When compared to the nearby schools, such as Bush Hill Elementary, Forestdale Elementary generally performs worse on SOL tests and has a lower statewide ranking. For example, in 2023-2024, Forestdale Elementary's 3rd-grade math proficiency rate was 52.63%, while Bush Hill Elementary had a rate of 76.92%. This suggests that Forestdale Elementary may need to learn from the instructional practices and strategies employed by the higher-performing nearby schools to address its academic challenges and the unique needs of its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Principal and staff is really good and caring. you will always find them smiling and working with kids. But the school has very little after school activities and there are not much focus on education related extra activities like science and maths. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
