Crestwood Elementary

Summary:

Crestwood Elementary is a public elementary school in Springfield, Virginia, serving 563 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district, which is ranked 41 out of 130 school districts in Virginia.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Crestwood Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Virginia elementary schools, with significantly lower academic performance than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of Crestwood students proficient or better in Mathematics ranged from 14.81% in 6th grade to 54.39% in 3rd grade, compared to 65.3% to 71.31% for Fairfax County and 59.41% to 70.11% for Virginia. The school's student subgroups, including Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, also perform significantly worse than their peers across the state.

Crestwood Elementary's demographic profile is notably different from nearby schools, such as Keene Mill Elementary, which has a much more diverse racial/ethnic composition and a lower percentage of students from low-income families. Despite spending more per student ($12,155 in 2020-2021) compared to some higher-performing nearby schools, Crestwood Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Virginia elementary schools, suggesting that the school may be facing significant challenges in effectively serving its diverse learner community and addressing their unique educational needs.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Don't be fooled by the varied demographic makeup of this school or the lower than average test scores (oftentimes a language barrier issue). This school has the best staff, teachers, and principal. My son has been attending Crestwood the past three years and we think it's great - a real gem of a school. We had the option of going the private school route or to attend a different Fairfax elementary school but opted to stay with Crestwood. As a parent, I am pleased. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
