Annandale High

Summary:

Annandale High is a diverse public high school serving grades 9-12 in Annandale, Virginia, part of the Fairfax County Public Schools district. With a student population that is 53.53% Hispanic, Annandale High stands out from its neighboring schools, which range from 13.28% to 61.38% Hispanic.

However, Annandale High faces academic challenges, with its students generally performing below the district and state averages on SOL (Standards of Learning) tests. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Virginia high schools, placing between 213 and 257 out of 329 schools. This is in contrast to nearby schools like Woodson High and West Springfield High, which outperform Annandale High academically. Additionally, Annandale High has a significantly higher percentage of students (63.47%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch compared to surrounding schools, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

Despite these challenges, Annandale High has some notable strengths. The school ranks 1st out of 92 Virginia high schools for military-connected students, indicating a strong support system for this population. Additionally, Annandale High's multi-racial students consistently perform at a high level, ranking 2nd and 9th out of 198 and 193 Virginia high schools in the 2023-2024 and 2022-2023 school years, respectively. These findings suggest that the school may be more effective in supporting certain student subgroups than others, and could provide valuable insights for improving the academic outcomes of its diverse student body.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Annandale may be slightly run-down in comparison to other schools in the county, but it offers a diverse and open-minded atmosphere that no other school can boast. Academics are what you make of them: there are students at Annandale who do not care if they pass their classes or not, but there are also students who have earned straight-As taking the most rigorous course load in the world. One can find good and bad teachers at any school, but there great ones far outnumber their opposites. I had the option of attending Woodson High School (complete with automatic toilets and loads of money), but I would not trade the Annandale experience for the world. It has opened my mind to the world and introduced me to people, religions, cultures, and philosophies that I may have never encountered otherwise. Furthermore, this lack of a majority race or system of beliefs levels the playing field: there are few bullies at Annandale. It wasn't until my senior year that I even heard about bullying at AHS, and as soon as it happened, students from all different groups organized an anti-bullying spirit week. There are certainly groups of friends, as there are anywhere, but anyone can talk to anyone else without fear of alienation. People at Annandale work for what they want, and many work to help provide for their families. That sense of responsibility unites us through our diversity and makes Annandale a uniquely special place to learn and grow. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
