Midway Elementary

Summary:

Midway Elementary is a public elementary school located in Church Road, VA, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 346. The school is part of the Dinwiddie County Public Schools district, which is ranked 92 out of 130 school districts in Virginia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Midway Elementary consistently outperforms the Dinwiddie County Public Schools district and the state of Virginia in standardized test scores, with 94.23% of 3rd graders proficient or better in SOL/Mathematics compared to 73.2% for the district and 70.11% for the state. The school has also ranked in the top 25% of Virginia elementary schools, with a ranking as high as 12th out of 1,096 schools in the 2015-2016 school year. However, Midway Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of White students (79.19%) compared to the surrounding schools, such as Dinwiddie Elementary, Southside Elementary, and Sutherland Elementary, which have more diverse student populations.

The sharp increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Midway Elementary, from 42.46% in 2021-2022 to 88.73% in 2022-2023, indicates a potential shift in the socioeconomic status of the school's population. This change may have implications for the school's resource allocation, support services, and overall approach to addressing the needs of its student body. Despite these challenges, Midway Elementary remains a high-performing school that consistently outpaces the district and state in academic measures, making it a standout option for families in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have worked at this school for 26 years. The faculty and staff are dedicated to each other and the students. Our custodians keep our school spotless. Our cafeteria staff greet everyone with a smile. Our bus drivers deliver our students safely to school. Our office staff not only keep the school running, but they always have time for a good morning or a quick story from a student. Our principal is on the ball and likes to have a ball with the students. Our teachers work well past the intended hours and are team players. We are serious about the task at hand each day, but the students also know we are their cheerleaders. I love being their librarian and the other resource teachers are 100 dedicated too. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
