J.A. Chalkley Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 10% of Virginia elementary schools over the past 10 years with a 0 or 1 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates on Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests are significantly lower than the Chesterfield County and Virginia state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. When compared to nearby schools in the Chesterfield County district, J.A. Chalkley Elementary consistently underperforms. For instance, Jacobs Road Elementary has significantly higher proficiency rates and a higher statewide ranking. Despite the school's low academic performance, J.A. The high percentage of minority and economically disadvantaged students at the school likely plays a significant role in its academic challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was assigned to JAC ES as an itinerate resource teacher and it was my home school. From the first week, I worked there, I was confronted with things I wish no one ever had to deal with again. Administrative negligence, looking over behaviors and violence in the classroom, like throwing chairs and desks, kids choking each other, stabbing other students with pencils, and even at one time in the year a kid brought ammunition from a firearm. The Admin walked on eggshells with behaviors because of the ages of the kids, but the teachers were the ones being abused and putting up with it all. Worst school in CCPS. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
